Frequently asked questions
Are dogs allowed?
Friendly dogs are very welcome. We do have livestock in adjacent fields so please keep them under control at all times.
How do I book activities?
We strongly recommend booking these in advance to avoid disappointment. When you make your booking you will receive an email with your exclusive camper discount code.
Do I have to book activities in advance?Activities that do not require an instructor like frisbee golf and orienteering will always be available. Our instructor based activities in private groups can be booked online. We may be able to offer activities on the day dependent on how busy the campsite is and if we have an instructor available. We don’t want you to miss out so if there is an activity you really want to try we strongly recommend you book in advance.
What is your COVID policy?
The government have confirmed campsites can open from July 4th. However, please ensure you have travel insurance to ensure you and your group are covered in case you are asked to isolate or have COVID symptoms at the time of your booking.
The current government advice restricts groups of more than six people from outside your household or more than two families staying out overnight together. Therefore, we have the following group size restrictions in place:
- A maximum group of six people from different households
- A maximum of of two households
If social distancing is still expected at the time of your visit we will ask everyone to do their bit. Don't worry we have plenty of space and outside is the safest place to be! Current guidance requires you maintain 2m social distance from people not from your own household.
Toilets and showers
All of our showers and toilets are indiviudal cubicles accessed from the outside - which is great as we have no higher risk shared indoor spaces. We are committed to making your experience as safe as possible. Hand sanitiser and hand washing stations will be available. Our campsite facilities are cleaned regularly and operate in accordance with all appropriate government advice. Our toilets and showers will be open with increased cleaning schedules. Our showers will be open in the morning and again in the afternoon and evening but may be closed during the middle of the day for deep cleaning.
Toilet roll has been identified as a high risk touch point. We are therefore asking guests to bring your own or buy one from our camp shop. Please also bring your own soap and if you are high risk or have people in your social/family bubbles that are high risk or shielding we recommend you bring your own masks, cleaning products, anti-bacterial wipes and hand gel etc.
Our activity and snowsport centre is just a short woodland walk away. Due to current government guidelines on group sizes and socialising we are only able to offer private activity sessions in your small groups or household units. Our prices are for your own exclusive group session which include a qualified instructor and all specialist equipment. Instructor led activities are now live to book on our website here and self-led activities can be booked through our partner Booksy here.
Play your part and keep everyone safe.
Thanks for your patience
Finally, please bear with us. Everything that needs doing will take slightly longer so your patience is greatly appreciated. We are constantly updating our guidelines, reviewing training and refining procedures to ensure both our team and guests are safe.
Can I camp near my friends?
Why aren't trailer-tents, caravans or large motorhomes allowed?
Basecamp is a basic, off-grid camp without the facilities and services caravans and motorhomes usually expect.
Our camp can only be accessed by a steep road with a tight hairpin bend which is not ideal for towing vehicles. There is also a low, sloping bridge with a low point of 2.7m which restricts access to tall vehicles. Trailer-tents are welcome if you are confident your vehicle has the torque to get up to the camp and understand the limited facilities available.
When can I check in?
Can we book a large group?
Due to the global pandemic there are still very strict rules on group sizes. You can stay overnight with a group of up to six friends from outside your household. You can also join up with one other household and camp with them. Larger groups are currently not permitted. We hope this will be relaxed further by the time we open.
Can I park by my tent?
You can park next to your tent.
Is there a shop?
Can I have a BBQ or fire?
Can I pitch anywhere?
We keep things as relaxed as possible. We won’t give you a pitch number but we might give you a zone to head towards. Don’t worry, the camping field is massive so there will be plenty of options. We want to keep an area for kids (including big kids) to be able to run around in, and obviously we wouldn’t recommend pitching up on any of the tracks but we will give you a map to show any no-go areas.
When do I check out?
You are very welcome to stay all day on your day of departure.
Can I invite day guests?
You are more than welcome to meet day guests at the activity centre, our onsite cafe-bar or on the activities you book. For security we only allow registered guests into the campsite.
Where’s the nearest cafe or bar?
Turner's Tavern is a three minute walk from Basecamp, down a magical illuminated woodland path.
Why do you not provide toilet roll???
Great question and obviously we usually do. However, toilet roll has been identified as a high risk touch point. Bring your own or buy them from the camp shop. Please also bring your own soap and if you are high risk or have people in your social/family bubbles that are high risk or shielding we recommend you bring you own cleaning products, anti-bacterial wipes and hand gel etc.
Do you have Wifi?
We have free, high speed wifi at our activity centre and in Turners Tavern. There is also a great 4G mobile connection and phone signal at the campsite.
What if I need to cancel?
We recommend you take out travel insurance to cover you should you need to cancel for medical reasons or due to a period of enforced quarantine.
If you do need to cancel your booking please let us know by email as soon as possible. Your booking will be cancelled with effect from the day we receive your email notification and subject to our standard cancellation charges:
More than 30 days notice - administration fee of £15
14 – 30 days notice - 50% of the total booking charge
Less than 14 days or after the booking start date - 100% of the total booking charge
If you cancel your booking after the booking start date, we cannot issue any refund for any remaining nights of your booking. This does include where you need to cancel your booking for any reason outside of your reasonable control, including without limitation, inclement weather and illness. We strongly recommend you take out holiday insurance to compensate you in these circumstances.
If, for whatever reason, you do not turn up on the arrival date stated on your booking confirmation, without prior notice this shall be considered a cancellation.
What if we cancel your booking?
This would always be an absolute last resort and only if its either considered unsafe to be open or Government guidance changes and we are not permitted to operate.
We will always try and find alternative dates for you to visit but we also strongly recommend that you obtain appropriate travel insurance for all members of your group. This should ideally cover illness, cancellation and injuries during your stay as refunds will not be possible if circumstances outside of our control force our closure.
What if I need to move my booking?
We will always do our best to accommodate changes to bookings. However, weekends are extremely popular so moving your booking to a different weekend may not be possible. Please give us as much notice as possible.
Will the toilets and showers be open?
Yes and all our showers and toilets are indiviudal cubicles accessed from the outside - which is great as we have no higher risk shared indoor spaces.
To ensure we are COVID-secure our showers and toilets will be deep cleaned twice a day and regularly checked. Our showers will be open in the morning and again in the afternoon and evening. They will be closed during the middle part of the day for deep cleaning.
How do I add an extra person to my booking or extend my stay?
Check online to see if there are any spaces left www.mendipbasecamp.com and book for any extra guests or any extra nights. You will all be able to camp together even if you have seperate bookings.
Do you still have spaces?
If you click on Book Now at the top of this page you'll be able to check availability live. If it lets you book then we have space and your pitch will be confirmed.
Can I hire a fire pit?
Fire pits can be hired for £10 for the duration of your stay and include a basic fire lighting kit to get you started. You can add one to your booking now or pick one up when you arrive.
I cant book the dates I want?
We are now only open for weekends in September. You can stay Friday and or Saturday nights. There is no check out time so you can stay as late as you like on your day of departure.
